“Soviet Foothold In Africa”

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, April 28. The South African Minister of External Affairs (Mr Eric Louw) said today that Russia had gained a permanent foothold in Africa and was trying to turn nonEuropean student youths into Communists. The Minister said in an interview with the political correspondent of “Dagbreek,” a Johannesburg Afrikaans Sunday newspaper, that Russia and Communist China recently played a leading role at the Afro-Asian conference at Cairo. The conference set up an AfroAsian Solidarity Council, with headquarters in Africa. This meant that Russia had gained a permanent foothold in the continent, Mid Mr Louw.
