PURCHASE OF FRIGATES

Statement By Minister (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. While he shared the Navy League/s desire to see New Zealand’s defences strong, it was an over-simplification to say that unless two more Whitby frigates were ordered, the Dominion would be the “weak Sister” in the Commonwealth defence of the Pacific, said the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) today. Commenting on a statement by the president of the league (Captain T. S. Marchington) that the defence of New Zealand demanded that the orders be placed for two more frigates this year, Mr Connolly said: “I can understand the league's desire to see two more Whitbys in service. So would I, and I can assure Captain Marchington that the needs of the Navy—and of the services in general—will be given full consideration in the difficult problem of balancing New Zealand’s overseas funds. “Captain Marchington, however,. knows the full background to the programme for the construction of the Whitbys at a cost of £13,000,000 for four, and I am sorry he has joined the ranks of those with a* blustering desire for publicity on defence matters.”
