Athletics EMPIRE GAMES TEAM
Miss Brain Not Included
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. An eleventh-hour bid to have a 19-year-old Auckland.hurdler, Miss Avis Brain, nominated for the New Zealand Empire Gaines team, failed tonight at a meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. A letter from Mr E. M. Horan, a delegate to the Auckland centre, was forwarded by the centre to the New Zealand association. He urged the association to reconsider nominations in view of Miss Brain's performances since the team was selected. Miss Brain, the New Zealand 80metres hurdles champion, beat Miss M. Stuart, who is in the New Zealand team, in the- record time of 10.9 seconds. The meeting felt it was impossible to approach the selectors, as all sports would then be entitled to present similar claims. The transfer of the national women’s and junior championships from Canterbury to Hawke’s Bay next year was approved. Hawke’s Bay will celebrate its centennial next year.
