Union Ordered To Lift Ban
SYDNEY, April 29. The full bench of the Industrial Court late this afternoon ordered the Seamen’s Union to lift a ban on the motor vessel Abel Tasman, which arrived recently to join the trans-Tasman service.
The Court ruled that a ban did exist, as it did on other vessels which the union had declared “black” at various times.
Earlier the Federal secretary of the Seamen’s Union, Mr E. V Elliot, denied that the ban existed and asked the Court to adjourn the application for an order. The Abel Tasman has been tied up at Sydney since April 2 without a crew
The 2680-ton vessel, owned by J. C. Sleigh, was brought to Australia, on March 31, from Aberdeen by a British crew. The policy of the union is that companies should send Australian crews to man vessels coming to Australia from overseas for the Australian coastal trade.
