COLLAPSE OF GROUND
Kalgoorlie Homes In Danger (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PERTH, April 28. Seven families, including 25 children, were evacuated early yesterday from their houses after thousands of tons of earth had collapsed in the Western Australian goldmining town of Kalgoorlie. 380 miles from Perth A hole 100 ft deep and 160 ft long opened in the ground near rows of houses. The fall of an estimated 35,000 tons of earth was started by the collapse of a mine pillar at the 500 ft level of Perserverance Mine on Kalgoorlie’s “golden mile.” The subsidence carried away 30ft trees and a 6ft hedge. A warning siren system has been installed to warn the town if the earth starts to move again.
