PORT RAILWAY CONGESTION

No Guard’s Vans For Goods Guard’s vans will not bd used on Christchurch-Lyttelton goods trains in future. This decision has been made by the Railways Department in an effort to avoid shunting congestion at Lyttelton. A spokesman for the department said that the vans caused “more trouble than enough” when the port was crowded. “Three red lamps are fitted to the end waggon and there is a seat for the guard in the locomotive.” Last year, the department used horse boxes instead of vans in a vain attempt to avoid congestion. The horse boxes had been converted into cargo-carrying waggons, but, like the vans, took too long to reverse. However, vans will still be attached' to passenger trains on the line and also on goods trains to more distant destinations.
