Mr Nordmeyer Replies
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. The Minister of Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) tonight replied to remarks by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) in relation to the recent £2O million London loan. “Mr Holyoake’s statement may be interpreted to mean—and may have been intended to mean—that New Zealand is not receiving the £2O million which the Government recently decided to borrow in London,” said Mr Nordmeyer. "In fact, New Zealand will receive the full £2O million asked for.” . The underwriters who had taken up the loan were "very hard headed gentlemen” and did not underwrite a loan for a government in which they had no confidence, he saia. “What Mr Holyoake failed to say was that this loan would not have been necessary had his Government taken steps to conserve our overseas funds in years when export prices reached record high levels,” said Mr Nordmeyer.
