EXPANSION OF N.Z. INDUSTRY
Technical Help From US.
(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, April 21. “If New Zealand’s industry is to expand, there is a fund of ‘know-how’ in the United States that can be tapped,” the First Secretary of the United States Embassy (Mr W. Kling) told the Associated Chambers of Commerce conference today. “The United States is deeply interested in New Zealand’s prosperity, and in further trade between the two countries,” said Mr Kling. America had been pleased at New Zealand’s recent lowering of tariffs against certain dollar items. “I hope the present problems associated with New Zealand’s great dairy industry are overcome and that the industry will again know prosperity,” he said. r One of the most important developments affecting the free world today was the European Common Market and free trade area. “Your discussion on this earlier in your conference has brought out many facts regarding this important topic, and it has made me think that perhaps the United States would have a common market with Canada. Everybody else is getting into the act—we might as well too.” Mr Kling stressed the benefits of the current European moves towards ec6nomic union. The common tariffs of the six common market countries or of the 15 free-trade nations should not be used, however, to raise higher trade barriers. “We in the United States are interested not in the raising of barriers but in lowering them,” he added.
