DEATH OF YOUNG SOLDIER
Brawl In West German Camp (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 14. A 20-year-old National. Serviceman in the Gloucester Regiment died from bayonet wounds and five of his comrades were injured in a bloody interregimental brawl in an Army Camp in West Germany, according to the “Daily Mail.’’ The fight—-between men of the First Battalion, Gloucester Regiment, and men of the First Battalion, King’s Regiment (Liverpool)—broke out in the N.A.A.F.I. (canteen) of Sennelager Barracks. Military policemen rushed up and arrested four soldiers, who were still in custody tonight—-twenty-four hours after the brawl. The young soldier who died was Private David Creed, of Cheltenham, the “Daily Mail” said. The “Daily Mail’’ also said that two soldiers in hospital at Sennelager were in a critical condition.
The fight is believed to have started because of rivalry between the regiments, which arrived at Sennelager Camp only a few days ago. An officer said, according to the newspaper: “There was no question of drunkenness. We are inclined to think that the tragedy might well have started as a leg-pull.”
