CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT
Use By Overseas Airlines
Support for Christchurch . as the international terminal for overseas airlines is to be given by the Civil Aviation Administration, according to the chairman of the City Council aerodrome committee (Cr. A. K. Guthrey). The support applies particularly to the use of Christchurch Airport as an alternative to Auckland’s Whenuapai during the period when Nandi, Fiji, will be closed, and when overseas airlines will wish to use bigger and heavier machines to bridge the Pacific gap.
“I had a very satisfying talk with Sir Arthur Nevill, Director of Civil Aviation, on the future use of the airport by overseas airline operators,” said Cr. Guthrey yesterday when he returned to Christchurch from Wellington. “He said he would encourage the French airline. T.A 1., to use Christchurch when it puts a D.C.7C on the ParisNew Zealand run. T.A.I. wants to start flying u this airliner from New Caledonia next month.
“To put it briefly. I think we have paved the way with C.A.A. to get an overseas airline service into Christchurch,” he said.
