RACING GREAT SENSATION SUCCESSFUL

Sockburn Handicap At Riccarton Great Sensation preserved his unbeaten record in open company by winning the Sockbum Handicap on the last day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. It was Great Sensation’s first start at .the meeting and his third in open class. At Riverton a week Earlier he made a successful start in open company in the Riverton Cup, and two days later he won the Easter Handicap. Great Sensation is a five-year-old gelding by Cassock from the Irish Lancer mare Speedy, and is closely related to The Joker, a Wellington Cup ' winner, and Lord Nuffield, one of the best sprinters of his time. He is owned by Mr D. W. Brown, who trains him at Wingatui, and was ridden by the apprentice, G. E. Lowry.

Great Sensation reached a short lead going to the furlong and won from Money-Go-Round and Ark Royal, both solid finishers. Ark Royal was the favourite, and Great Sensation second favourite. It was Ark Royal’s third minor placing at the meeting. He had luck against him each time, and there was no faster finisher in the Sockburn Handicap. Purser completed the double by winning the Waltham Handicap for Mr R. G. Gerard. This four-year-old Neptune gelding brilliantly took an opening in the straight and won by a length from Mindanao, which did not have the same luck in the running from the home turn. Holders of 2860 5s tickets on the Great Sensation—Purser combination received £62 Is 6d for £l. Inquiries were made for Purser on behalf of an Australian owner after his win on Saturday. This was his fourth success in open company and his seventh for the season. Purser is trained at Riccarton by J. E. Shaw and was ridden by R. J. Skelton. Equal Terms, an expensive failure in the Great Easter Handicap five days earlier, led all the way for a decisive win in the sixty-sixth Challenge Stakes, for which he was second favourite. The brilliant North Island three-year-old won handily by a length from Mighty Dollar, last year’s winner. The two-year-old Blonde Sprite, was another length back third. Fifth Win This was Equal Terms’s fifth win in seven starts this season. He won twice in three starts in his first season. He is owned by Messrs P. J. B. and W. Smith, is trained by C. McCullough and D. R. Jeffcoat at Wbcdville and was ridden by K. J. Grylls. Ration Time (Yaldhurst Handicap) and Olympic Flame (Merivale Handicap), both Riccartontrained gallopers, were successful win favourites. The weather was fine, the track in good order. On-course the totalisator handled £97,189, including £10,221 10s on the double, compared with £96,715 last year. The on-course total for the meeting was £298,214 compared with £292,355 at the club’s successful meeting a year ago. The off-course turnover of £267,496 5s for the meeting was £55,023 10s higher than last year’s. The First Leg Great Sensation followed Drum Roll into the straight in the Sockburn Handicap, ran into a short lead going to the furlong, and won by half a length from Money-Go-Round, a solid finisher. Ark Royal finished brilliantly for third a neck back, catching Cornflake in the last few strides. Great Sensation led out of the straight from Cornflake, Drum Roll and Liban, but his apprentice rider showed no desire to keep him in front and he was able to drop in behind when Solstice moved forward on the outside going to the nine furlongs. Drum Roll and Tamarisk were then trailing, and Liban and Great Sensation were following closely. Goldwyn, whose rider had lost an iron at the start, was going forward on the outside of Cornflake and Money-Go-Round, and Ark Royal was close at hand. Shoal was then tailing off. Drum Roll, galloping keenly, was alongside Solstice at the five fur-

longs and went ahead in the lead when the Riccarton light-weight dropped out quickly coming to the straight. Great Sensation, Money-Go-Round, Cornflake, Tamarisk and Promise were closest to Drum Roll after straightening up. Mananui was also working forward, but R. J. Skelton had to take Ark Royal very wide to get a run. A furlong out Great Sensation had a clear lead, with Money-Go-Round, Cornflake and Ark Royal giving chase. Great Sensation’s lead was whittled down slightly near the end but the Cassock gelding won handily enough by hglf a length. Ark Royal, which was going better than anything else in the field at the end, did well to get up for third from Cornflake. Mananui was a fair fifth, just beating Tamarisk and the weakening Drum Roll. Then there was a length and a half to Promise, which reached the end of his run going to the furlong. Promise was followed in by Seadune. Motueka, Teaka (twice checked in the running), Royal Halyard, Shoal, Liban, Solstice, Neptime’s Pride, Goldwyn and Coin’s Edge. All-the-way Win Equal Terms made all the running in the Sixty-sixth Challenge Stakes, for which he was second favourite. Mighty Dollar kept up a dogged run in* the straight, but the Woodville three-year-old held him safely by a length. Blonde Sprite, the closest to Equal Terms on the home turn, was weakening slightly in third place another length back. Equal Terms led to the five furlongs by a length and a half from Blonde Sprite. Mighty Dollar and Her Ex were running abreast a length back, and a length ahead of Airephelia. Then there was half a length to Watch and Wait, a length to Monogram and a length and a half to Magic Carpet. Mighty Dollar was eased away from the trailing position on the inner early in the run home to give chase after Equal Terms and Blonde Sprite. He mastered the two-year-old, but did not look like catching Equal Terms. Monogram made ground on the inner from the turn for fourth, but two lengths behind Blonde Sprite. The others, beaten off, finished almost in line. In a photo-finish Watch and Wait was- placed fifth from Her Ex, Airephelia and Magic Carpet. The Second Leg Purser took a ga P brilliantly in tte straight and won the Waltham Handicap, second leg of the double, by a length from Mindanao. Chey-

enne, the leader inside the last furlong, was three-quarters of a length back third. Mijiji was slow to accelerate from the inside barrier position and in a few strides was tailing the field. My Friend, Cheyenne, Post and Avenge were the quickest beginners. Mr Friend led round to the halfmile and on to the straight from Avenge and Post. On the turn Curtain Raiser, Keep Time, Cheyenne, and Purser were closest of the others, but Mindanao was near the tail of the field. Cheyenne made a likely run on the inner going to the furlong, but could not sustain it. Mindanao had sped through on the Inner but could not continue the run through lack of running room. Purser had better luck, and once he found a gap he galloped strongly to victory by a length. Mindanao beat Cheyenne by threequarters of a length for second. Then there was a length and a half to the fast-finishing Pack Drill and heads to Salonica, Pink Rose and My Friend. ink Rose did well to finish so far up; she was second to last after a furlong. My Friend was followed in by Rise and Shine, Avenge, Post, Keep Time, Curtain Raiser, Red Elm, Instigator, Sarcelle, King Robin, Mijiji and Fair Summer. Results:— PEERSWICK HURDLES, Of £5OO.
