TEACHER TRAINING SCHEME
Technical College Board Discussion
The Education Department’s emergency scheme for training university graduates and other suitable persons as post-primary teachers was discussed and referred to the executive committee at a meeting of the Christchurch Technical College board of managers on Friday evening. In a circular to the board, the Director of Education (Mr C. E. Beeby), said that training would be carried out in selected schools where the trainees, in groups of three to five, would be placed under specially-selected supervising teachers. The length of the training period might be one term, or less if suitable positions became, available and the senior inspectors recommended the appointment. The scheme, which would have age limits of 25 and 30, would believe the pressure on present teachers and encourage other persons to take up teaching. Mr Beeby said. The board agreed to co-operate with the New Zealand Furniture Trades Apprenticeship Committee in allowing apprentices in the South Island (except Nelson and Marlborough), to attend block courses in cabinetmaking at the college. The board expressed appreciation of the Christchurch Drainage Board’s renewal of its grant of £5O. to the college and of the contribution of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Motor Trade Association towards the cost of additional automotive units for the college
