OVERSEAS SHIP ARRIVALS
Last Year’s 990 A Record Nine hundred ships arrived at New Zealand ports from overseas in 1957—a record which exceeded the 1955 figure by 76 and 122 more than arrived in 1956. Cargo brought was 4.562.000 tons, which was 340.000 tons more than in 1956. The 4.858.000-ton record set in 1955 still stands. Exported cargo in 1057 reached a new record of 1,518.000 tons. A total of 11.345.000 tons of overseas and coastal cargo was handled, which was also a record. This exceeded the 1956 figure by 370,000 tons. Motor spirit tonnage rose from 1,230,000 in 1956 to 1,416,000 last year. The four main ports—Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin —handled between them 72 per cent, of the cargo. Among the secondary ports, Tauranga handled 266,000 tons, which was 99,000 more than in 1956, a 59 per cent, increase.
Although the number of overseas ships using New Zealaftd ports showed an increase, the 12,855 calls made by coastal vessels was about 100 fewer than in 1956.
