RIVER CONTROL SCHEMES
Preparation By Engineers
A framework of procedure in the preparation of proposals for engineering schemes was adopted by the North Canterbury Catch-; ment Board yesterday. By the procedure, the ratepay-: ers would know the proposals; and the board would have rea-; sonable cause to believe that the scheme would be acceptable to ratepayers in the end, said Professor G. Jobbems. Mr A. C. Norton was appointed to classify the Ellesmere area, i with the assistance of Professor A. H. Flay, who advised that ,a full revision of his economic Kgport was unwarranted. At the request of the Lake Settlers’ Association, the board supported the principle of a permanent low level of Lake Elies-} mere and decided that the cost of pumping, originally fixed by the engineer-in-chief (Mr H. M. Reid) at £12.000. be reviewed.
The maintenance of the stopbank at Waikuku down to the Cafe road was agreed to, Mr A. T. Bell saying the board had an obligation to maintain works on which money had been spent. Of the 120, Waikuku ratepayers who voted on a proposal for a special rating area at Waikuku at a meeting on Saturday attended by board representatives, only six voted in favour, reported the rivers control and drainage committee.
