CURRENT NOTES
The Somerfield Townswomen’s Guild provided the programme for the women’s section of the: Returned Services’ Association at their monthly social, held in the Jellicoe Hall recently. A humorous mannequin parade was held of old-fashioned styles by members of the guild. Mrs B. Henderson was compere. Duets and solos were sung. A competitii) was won by Mrs P. McDonald. Arrangements were made for members of the women’s section to sell poppies on April 24. Miss S Britain presided.
The seventeenth annual meeting of the Spreydon sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held recently. Mrs Rose was in the chair The following officers were elect-ed:—-Patron. Dr. Stewart Wilson: president. Mrs J. Healey; secre-tary-treasurer. Mrs G. R. Laurie: committee. Mesdames Powell. Holstein, Dickson. Cobb. Frazer, and Richards.
The monthly meeting of the St. Martins-Opawa Garden Club was held recently. Mrs J. E. Carr presided. The speaker was Mrs C. E. Foweraker. who gave a talk on rock plants and gardens. She illustrated her talk with flowering specimens of rock and alpine plants from her garden. Mrs Carr thanked the speaker on behalf of members.
The three Mothers’ Union branches of St. Matthew’s Church, recently held a combined meeting which opened with a choral service in the church conducted by the Rev. C. L. Dobbs, and a Lenten address given by the Rev Monroe Peaston. The parish choral group sang the anthem “I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked.” After the service, guests from the Diocesan executive. country link branches, the three parish Young Wives’ groups and other organisations were welcomed. Two tableaux were presented to show the work of the Mothers’ Union. The first one. entitled “The Wedding Ring” produced by St. Thomas's Drama Group, had the first object ot the Mothers' Union as its theme —the sanctity of marriage. •‘Other Sheep Have I.” was presented by St. Matthew's Drama Group and it depicted the work of the Mothers’ Union overseas. Vocal duets were given by Mesdames L. Farr and C. F Collins.
The monthly meeting of the Young Men’s Christian Association Ladies Auxiliary was held recently. Mrs Paine presidea. Flowers had been sent to two sick members it was reported. The secretary reported that the City Council nad given permission for a street stall to be held in October. A request from the house committee asking for floor covering for stairs and landings in the hostel was considered.
Bomber Explodes.—A B-47 Stratojet bomber was ripped in two by an explosion high over western New York State today and fell to the earth in flames, carrying its crew of four to their deaths. —-New York, April 10.
