H-Bomb Tests
Sir,—Replying to T. E. Shaw, in my letter I stressed taking into account the existence of emotion —of various kinds—but I did not, I hope, claim immunity from fear. But .what does happen with some of us, especially the religious, is that “fear” is off-set by “faith.” Out of this comes the emotion of courage. How wonderful it would be if only a proportion of the energy and treasure now spent on deterrents were devoted to training us all mentally and morally to that new kind of courage, the courage to go on exercising our freedom regardless of everything. Then we might even have the courage to trust our enemies, if anyone could be so regarded. With regard to leading a peace delegation to Russia, I might point out that my religious body, the Society of Friends, has already done this more than once.»and also invited Russians to England.—Yours, etc., JOHN JOHNSON.
