NEW MISSILE STRATEGY
Emphasis On Defence
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, April 10. The advent of the guided missile decreed that strategy for the next 10 years would become essentially defensive, the British Supply Ministry’s controller ot guided weapons and electronics, Mr R. Cockburn, told, the Roya! Aeronautical Society tonight. Direct defence against ballistic missiles was “certainly not impossible,” and defence by ground-to-air missiles would be cheaper than conventional fighter defence, he said. Modern, inter-continental ballistic missiles had at least 10 times the range and accuracy of World War II German rockets, Mr Cockburn said. But design ol large rocket motors was still in its infancy and better control and greater reliability must be developed. The manned aircraft would continue to make a vital contribution to air strength, he said. If still was the only means of air transport, surveillance and tactical support.
