FLIGHT ACROSS ANTARCTIC
Johnston Trophy For R.A.F. Pilot I New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 11. The first man -to fly a singleengined aircraft across the Antarctic leaves from Wellington tomorrow aboard the liner Rangitoto. He is Squadron-Leader John Lewis, who received notice in Wellington today that his achievement had won for him the 1957 award of the Johnston memorial trophy, bestowed for outstanding services to aviation by the Guild of Air Pilots and I Air Navigators. The award will be presented to Squadron Leader Lewis at the | guild’s annual meeting in London on May 28. Squadron Leader Lewis flew a De Havilland Otter aircraft from Shackleton Base to South Ice in an attempt to cross the white continent on December 30. He was forced to stop at South Ice. His second attempt, on January 6. was successful.
