Kerr’s Reach
Sir,—As a spectator at the rowing races held at Kerr’s Reach on Saturday I was disgusted with the conditions that are being put up with by rowers, bystanders, and local residents. The area has obviously been completely neglected for many years and as a result the embankment built for the Centennial Games is now covered with * gorse and broom six feet high. The river bank is covered with several inches of loose sand and this, in the strong wind blowing on Saturday. made conditions unbearable. Obviously many thousands of pounds of ratepavers* monev were spent on Kerr’s Reach at the time of the Centennial but it would appear that this has been largely wasted. In its present condition Kerr’s Reach is a disgrace to the city and it is time the responsible authorities made some effort to bring it up to the high standard maintained in other ci tv parks and reserves.— Yours, etc., ONLOOKER. March 31. 1958. [The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr H. S. Feast) said: “It was not intended that the work done at Kerr’s Reach before the Centennial Games should be regarded as permanent. The brief interval between the completion of the cut and the holding of the games enabled only temporary work to be carried out. The council is at present considering a permanent lay-out and has asked the rowing association to acquaint the council with its requirements.”]
