Brummel And Braganza Sprint Well In Trials

The two-year-olds, Brummel and Braganza were fastest trialists on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. Brummel galloped alone, and Braganza was a companion for his stablemate Tombola.

The Sockburn Handicap candidates, Tamarisk and Motueka, ran seven furlongs quickly in one of the best trials on the plough. Both tracks gave excellent footing.

Brummel (N. Cowles) sped from the half mile on the outside of the course proper in 48 3-5. It was a good trial for the Richmond Handicap on the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting.

Braganza (A. J. Stokes) and Tombola (W. Hanlin) sprinted five furlongs. Braganza, with the outside running, won a good trial by a head, and recorded 49 for the last half-mile. His fifth in the Champagne Stakes was nothing like one of his best runs. He could very well atone for that failure in the Richmond Handicap. Tombola is one of the smartest hack sprinters in the Gimcrack Handicap. Balrannach (A. J. Stokes) sprinted from the half-mile in 50. Tabriz (W. Hanlin) joined in for the last three furlongs, and held a short lead at the finish.

Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) took 52 1-5 for his half-mile, and Sarcelle (N. Eastwood) was near top while running five furlongs, the last four in 53 4-5. Sarcelle will be solidly supported to complete a good double for the meeting in the Watham Handicap. Shoal (I*. Woodhouse) recorded 1.33 2-5 for seven furlongs and 52 4-5 for the last four. El Jefe (A. J. Stokes) and Whiohau (J. Beck) were abreast clear of Nugget (R. L. Browning) after running seven furlongs in 1.30 1-5, the last four in 52 1-5. Mundus (L. McGuire) beat Monogram (K. J. Grylls) from the half-mile by a length in 50 2-5. Monogram has done nothing of note in training while he has been at Riccarton, but his close fifth in the Great Easter is evidence of his fitness. Blonde Sprite (W. D. Skelton) and Pinnace (N. A. Dempsey) ran from the half-mile on terms in 49 4-5. Skelton will ride Blonde Sprite in the Challenge Stakes.

Count Pierre (W. D. Skelton) led Romancing (C. T. Wilson) by half a length ending half a mile in 51. They form a popular bracket for the Richmond Handicap. Glare (R. B. Taggart) and Ration Time (A. H. Eastwood) unhurriedly ran their half-mile in 54 l-ssec. Two-year-olds’ Work English Prince (M. R. Jones). Tauntress (W. D. Skelton) and Befana (L. McGuire) followed in 52 45sec. They are two-year-olds, and newcomers at the meeting. The Washdyke-trained English Prince’s last race was in the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton in February. He was fifth. Post (N. Eastwood), an indifferent track worker, took 54 3-5 sec for his half-mile. Sevicke (F. H. Skelton) and Pickard (D. J. Thistoll) were paired for six furlongs. They ran the last four on terms in 51sec.

Foxplay (C. McDonald), and Nolibelle (E. G. Low) jumped away well from the starting gate and sprinted three furlongs down the back in 40 3-ssecl Bobbie Bums (L. McGuire) sprinted from the half-mile in 50 l-ssec, and did his work well. He tried for an all-the-way win over a mile on Tuesday, weakening to sixth. He will be tested over seven furlongs in the Gimcrack Hack Handicap tomorrow.

King Lyn (N. Eastwood) recorded 52 2-ssec for his half-mile. My Friend (R. J. Skelton) followed in 50 4-ssec. She seldom runs a bad race and may take beating in the Waltham Handicap. Avenge (N. Cowles) and King Robin (F. H. Skelton) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec, the first two strongly in 24 4-ssec. They stayed on terms all the way. Avenge will start a fresh campaign in the Waltham Handicap. Mighty Dollar (A. N. Didham) recorded 52sec for his half-mile, and did his work well under a good weight. Hearth Rug (B. W. McDonald) ran home from the half-mile in 51 3-ssec, and Fairy King (W. D. Skelton) followed in 51 2-ssec. Mananui (B. W. McDonald) and Sun House (J. L. Coulter) were tested over a mile. They recorded Imin 48sec for the distance, and ran the last half-mile keenly in 50 2-ssec. Sun House is a doubtful runner in the Waltham Handicap.

Equal Terms (K. J. Grylls), one of the earliest trialists on the plough, sped over half a mile in 49 4-ssec, the final three furlongs in 36 4-ssec.

Tamarisk (B. S. Finlayson) and Motueka (R. W. Gould) did well to run seven furlongs in Imin 28 3-ssec. the last four in 50sec and the final three in 37 2-ssec. The stablemates, Brianbra (B. W. McDonald) and Vivien Leigh

(J. Beck) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 17 4-ssec, the last four in 50 2-ssec. They will give J. E. Shaw’s stable strong representation in the Gimcrack Hack Handicap.

Willie Wolseley (E. G. Low) led his stablemate Serang (J. W. McDonald) by a length and a half finishing seven furlongs in Imin 33sec, the last four in 51 l-ssec and the final three in 38sec. They are form horses from the Waimate stable of P. H. Andrews in the Merivale Hack Handicap.

Kalan (T. Wilson), Gold Crown (R. W. Gould) and Goldwyn (B. S. Finlayson) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the last four in 51 l-ssec and the final three in 38 l-ssec. Teaka (A. J. Stokes) went six furlongs easily in Imin 20 4-ssec, the last four in 52sec. His stablemate Olympic Flame (N. Eastwood) ran seven furlongs in Imin 32 l-ssec. She increased speed about half-way through the gallop and sped over the last three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. It was a good trial for the Merivale Hack Handicap. The stablemates. Robes (L. McGuire) and Heath (R. J. Blair) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 18 2- and the final three in 39 3-
