Local bodies control American airports completely, although al least 50 per cenL of the cost is i contributed by the Federal Government as a 'grant to foster civil air transport." said Mr L Fisher, a leading American consultant in airport management, who arrived' in Auckland today. Mr Fisher.' who has been connected with the development of more than 100 airports, has come to advise the Wellington City Council on how to run Rongolai. Mr Fisher said that, in America, half the cost of an airport came from the Federal Government; under the Federal aid airport pro- i gramme. Any local body in an 1 area could sponsor an airport. The Government laid down that the airport should be maintained ' for 20 years, and the Government installed all navigational aids, and so on. and paid the controllers. 1 On the construction of airport’ terminals. Mr Fisher said: “We never plan to peaks in accommodation. What we plan to is future loads.” Mr Fisher thinks it will take five years to complete a new air-: port—buildings and all. The fastest project he knew of in America took three years Mr Fisher left Auckland today and on the way to Wellington will talk to the Hamilton, the New Plymouth, and the Wanganui City Councils. He will have his first meeting with the Wellington council on Thursday morning.
