RACING Japonica Wins Easter Handicap At Ellerslie

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, April 6

Making a brilliant run when it seemed the race was all but over, Japonica won narrowly in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie yesterday? Starting the run home it appeared that Solepic would take the honours. The next moment it was Arran Chief and on the post it was Japonica by a head.

Arran Chief and Melanion dead-heated for second, and Great Rose was a close fourth. The next best were Indian Mars md Windermere. Cardinal King, the favourite, did not get in the first 14, and the second fancy, Salaam, came twelfth. Saturday’s attempt was Japonica’s fourth in the Easter Handicap and the best she had done before was fourth, in 1955, behind Fair Chance, Redcraze, and Arawa. Last year she was fifth and, the time before, ninth. She is a seven-year-old mare by Paper Boy from Black Robe and J.he first of her age and sex to have won the race since the distance was made one mile in 1898. Japonica is in her last season of racing, and after her victory on Saturday, she was booked to the Ra Ora Stud stallion, Gabador. She is owned by Mr A. McKenzie, of Invercargill, who made the long trip north to see the race. She is trained at Takanini by F. J. Cobb. The £3lOO for first brought her earnings to £13,737. Marie Brizard, a hot favourite in the Great Northern Oaks, was beaten decisively into second by the Hastings filly, Froth, which went clear when the pace was slow about six furlongs from the finish. Six Lengths In the end Froth won by six lengths and Marie Brizard beat

Love and Kisses by two lengths for second. Froth hat won the New Zealand Oaks as well, so she is proving very useful for her owner-breder, Mrs J. H. Lowry. ; The T.A.B. double, Japonica and Ole, paid £ll9 19s for £l. Conditions were most favourable, the weather being brilliantly fine and cod, and the going easy. The attendance was 25,506, compared with 26,163 on the first dsy last year. The totalisator on - course handled £228,929 10s, including £45,136 on the double, compared with £218,561 15s last year.
