TRIALS FOR ELLERSLIE

Cardinal King Impresses •*The Prese” Special Service AUCKLAND. April 4. An outstanding gallop by the visiting Great Northern Oaks candidate, Froth, and an impressive six furlongs by Cardinal King were the highlights of the training at Ellerslie yesterday. Others which performed well Were Biltong, Robert Kay. Love and Kisses, and Tarry Town. Galloping was done *4O feet out on the course proper, where the ground was in excellent order. A number of gallops could not be timed because of a heavy fog which covered the course uhtil fairly late in ■ the morning. Froth (Forbes) began at a fast pace and kept galloping strongly to the finish of a mile in Imin 42 3-5 sec. Rover (Wiggins) and Lovely Chance (Grylls) began with her. but at the end of two furlongs in 24 3-ssec they were the best part of 12 lengths behind. Although Rover made up some ground, he never looked like catching Froth over the last three in 37 3-ssec. Lovely Chance was beaten off. Froth could not have been more impressive, and if she has not been harmed by the gallop she may test Marie Brizard to the full. Rover wag disappointing. He 'has had a fairly tough season, and it may be starting to tell. His mission is the Great Northern St. Leger on Monday. Had Weight Advantage Cardinal Kinft (Day), which Had a big weight advantage, beat Sblepic (Forbes) by two lengths over six furlongs in imin 17 3-ssec, Cardinal King finished keenly under a strong hold. It was easily his most impressive effort since he arrived earlier In the week.: Biltong (Forbes) and Verve (Smith) ran a mile in imin 43 4-5 sec, a fine gallop for horses in the hack class. They Sprinted the first two furlongs in 23see and were not ridden out over the final stages. From No. 1 at the start. Biltong looks a bright prospect in the Eden Handicap. Robert Kay (Day) covered seven furlongs in imin 30 2-ssec, the last six strongly in Imin 17 l-ssec. He has worked consistently well this week and may upset the betterperformed horses in the President’s Handicap. Love and Kisses (Campbell) strode freely over seven furlongs in imin 30sec, the last five in Imin 3 3-ssec, and three in 38 2-ssec. Love and Lisses looks a little out of her depth in the Great Northern Oaks, but she may be hard to beat in hack races later at . the meeting.
