Civic Reception In Christchurch

A civic welcome to Sir Vivian Fuchs, leader of the British TransA ntarctic Expedition, and Ladv Fuchs, was held in Cathedral square at lunch time on Thursday. The big crowd loudlv cheered the Polar exnlorer as he Stood with his wife and thMayor of Christ-hurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P.) and others on the balcony of the United Service Hotel. “I would like to. pay a tribute to those people who were working out towards „s from Scott Ba«e—especially Sir Edmund Hillary. They made our task a great deal easier and less dangerous.” said Sir Vivian Fuchs. “But. thinking of all the work everybodv did to get us across the continent I ean say we have been a lot of trouble .to a lot of peonle—all to get 12 men across the ice.” Sir Vivian Fuchs said he welcomed the chance to sneak to the people -of Christchurch, because he had heard so much of the effort the Citv had made to sunnort the eXoedition. “I thank vou for yovr assistance and the very keen interest I am told von all took in our progress across the continent" he said. A Mayoral reception to Sir Vivian and Lady Fuchs was held before their departure for Wellington on Thursday night. Manv guests were present in the United Services Hotel, where Sir Vivian and Ladv Fuchs were introduced to members of the New Zealand expedition party, their wives and' others. In the morning Sir Vivian ■’’uchs visited the Christchurch Bovs’ High School, where he inspected a guard of honour. th“ Christchurch Girls’ High School, and the Aranui Primarv School, where nearly 1000 children were gathered.
