TWO DEATHS ON ROADS

Bad Start To Holidays

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, APRIL 4.

Two fatal accidents occurred on the roads throughout the country within 24 hours of the start of the Easter Holidays. One death occurred at Runanga, where a pedestrian on a country road was knocked down by a car at 9.15 p.m. yesterday. The second death occurred in the North Island, near Waifakei,

less than. 15 minutes later. A girl was killed and a man injured when their car ran into the back of a truck.

The record is in keeping with the last Easter period, when, during the first ,24 hours, two deaths occurred. Eight persons died over the whole Easter period.

Traffic in most districts has been reported to be heavy—heavier in some areas than during the last Christmas holiday rush periods.

Travelling too close, speeding, and failure to keep left have been main driving faults noted this Easter. In some districts, drivers have been driving in an unwise manner on roads where rain has fallen or is falling. Micro-wave speed detection equipment has been used day and night and a number of tickets and warnings have been issued so far this holiday. A large contingent of plainclothes traffic officers are on duty throughout the country. The. Transport Department tonight issued another plea to road users to be careful, in particular to drivers and pedestrians in areas where the weather is bad.
