DOUG AND TONI REID BOTH KEEN CRICKETERS

QN a calm Saturday morning at Elmwood Park a week or so ago, while a boys’ match was in progress in one corner of the ground, another was occupied by a man who bowled, left-arm, at a single stump and a woman who also bowled, left-arm, back to him. Both were Canterbury representatives—Doug. Reid, of Old Boys, and his wife, Toni. The Reids* enthusiasm . for cricket is immense, it may well be that the household economy sometimes becomes confused with the current cricket averages. Reid, who bowls swingers, has taken the best part of 300 wickets for Old Boys since he first played seniors in 1949-50, as a boy fresh from school. He has represented, the province with success on several occasions. His bowling is lively and accurate: so is his

TONI HEID

wife’s. Her bowling is of almost precisely the same type. Which is the senior partner in this cricketing firm is far from clear. In the last two seasons Doug. Reid has taken 97 senior wickets, Toni 92, but the feminine flair for a bargain is there, and her bowling average is about five,

Doug’s about 15. This last season Toni has had rather more success with the bat too. In the next few months the Reids will be turning their attention to hockey, and to Rugby—as spectators. Toni Reid is a daughter of Read Masters, the former All Black. Rugby administrator, and author. Next summer the Reids’ cricketing situation may become clearer. But whatever success they have, this likeable young couple will remain among cricket's staunchest supporters.
