A fire in some bales of straw at 60 Riselaw street, owned by Mr R. G. Fox, was attended at 9.32 a.m. on Saturday by one unit from the St. Albans fire station. About 10 bales were destroyed, but there was no other damage. Two units from the Central station answered a call to 368 Armagh street at 9.43 a.m., where a fire in the kitchenette caused some damage to the walls and roof. The premises are occupied by Mr W. S. Craven. A grass fire on the property of C. W. F. Hamilton, Ltd., in Lunns road, Middleton, at 9.23 p.m. was attended by units from Central and Sockburn. The fire was con trolled before any damage was done.
A grass fire „at 10.26 p.m. in a group housing block in Wairakei road was extinguished by units from St. Albans and Central. There was no damage.
A fire in some nesting boxes on the premises of Smiths City Market, in Dundas street, occurred at 9.30 a.m. yesterday, but there was no damage. Two units from Central attended the outbreak.
An oven fire at 52 Uxbridge street at 10.24 a.m. and a rubbish fire at 3 Kyle street at 11.26 a.m. were both put out before any damage occurred.
Idle Shipping.—The number of ships idle in British ports rose by 41 last month to a total of 182, the United Kingdom Chamber of Shipping said today. They totalled 967,655 tons, and included 32 tankers totalling 275.208 tons. —London, March 29.
