RACING Good Win For Bridie In Awapuni Gold Cup

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, March 30. The Hawera-lrained horses, Peter 'Baffles and Bridie, dominated the principal events on the concluding day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Awapuni on Saturday.

Peter Baffles convincingly won the Tamatete Handicap in which he beat a strong field, and Bridie handsomely won a highly-enter-taining contest for the Awapuni Gold Cup, at weight-for-age. Peter Baffles has had his career restricted by recurring soreness, but when he is favoured with suitable track conditions he is much above the average, which he confirmed on Saturday. Moving into a handy position on the turn, he dashed away from the field starting the last furlong and won by three lengths from Agathis, Bugle Boy and Gentoleno.

Peter Baffles is a five-year-old gelding by Blue Coral from Betty Baffles, and is trained at Hawera by H. J. Callahan, who races him in partnership with his wife. It was his second start for the season, and he paid £2l 10s 6d and £6 4s.

Tbe second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Longbum Handicap, was won easily by the Woodvilletrained Equal Terms, which was favourite and led all the way. He was under a hold running to the straight, but once K. J. Grylls gave him more rein, he drew away and won easily from Regal Dignitary and Kiatoa. It was Equal Terms’s first start since October, and the win made his record six wins from eight starts. His next race will be in the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton on Easter Money when he will again be ridden by Grylls. The double dividend for Peter Baffles and Equal Tern s was £6O 16s. The on-course double, won by Golden Easter and Paulo, returned £9B 19s. Notable Victory The good four-year-old mare, Bridie, scored a notable victory in the Awapuni Gold Cup, for which she was the favourite. Bridie was at the rear early and started to move up from the five furlongs. She was with the leaders turning for home and ran on strongly to beat Highlander narrowly, with Pinnacle Ridge just beating Rover for third. Although five favourites were successful, there were some large dividends. The best was £5O Is and £2O 7s returned by The Bandit when he won the second division of the Autumn Plate.

The weather was fine and mild and the track was in good order though yielding. The attendance was fairly good considering the counter-attrac-tion of the air pageant at Ohakea and the on-course turnover of £96,826 10s was £B6B 10s better than the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £194,858 10s, an increase of £5284. Tamatete Handicap

Juventas and Grand Bank were the slowest to begin in the Tamatete Handicap, and Himiler, Innesfell, Nine Days and Sonloch dwelt. Lennox Boy took over at the five furlongs from Idle Fancy, Domitare, Bion, Bugle Boy, Conkers King, Chateau, Let's Go, Peter Baffles and India.

The field raced in closely-packed formation across the top turn, where India and Innesfell were both awkwardly placed. Peter Baffles was able to improve, and when they reached the straight Lennox Boy and Domitare had charge from Idle Fancy, Bion, Peter Baffles and Bugle Boy. With about a furlong and a half to run Peter Baffles made a brilliant dash to the front and he remained clear over the last furlong to score a meritorius win by three lengths. Second went-to Agathis by half a head from Bugle Boy, with heads to Gentoleno and Golden Bank. The Second Leg There was an even start for the Longbum Handicap, though Balfast soon drifted to the rear. Chattering and Equal Terms were quickly in charge from Raydeen. Regal Dignitary, Moon Crest and Kaye Gilpin, clear of Ballador and Kiatoa. When they reached the half-mile 'Equal Terms, under a hold, was shading Chattering for the lead, and they were followed by Sonella, Regal Dignitary, Moon Crest and Raydeen, with Kaye Gilpin. Ballador and Kiatoa next. Equal Terms was allowed more rein as soon as he turned for home, and he strode away for an easy win though his rider kept him going with hands and heels

He was five lengths clear of Regal Dignitary, which held off Kiatoa and Moon Crest by narrow margins. Raydeen was fifth, followed by Balfast, Chattering. Sonella and Ballador.

Awapuni Gold Cup There was a perfect start for the Awapuni Gold Cup. The first to break it was Savage, but very soon Lorica sped to the front and he set a scorching pace round the bottom turn three lengths clear of Rover and Savage together, another three lengths to Imitation, Royal Zorra and Summersette, then Hot Drop, Full Cup, Bridie, Pinnacle Ridge, Anacapri. Highlander and Calcutta Sweep. Except that Bridie started to improve her position from the five furlongs there were few changes in the running order. Lorica was tiring near the half-mile, where Rover (rails) and Savage closed on him. Savage kept Rover pocketed on the fence. The field bunched up making the home turn, where Savage was the leader from Bridie. Pinnacle Ridge and Rover, and Highlander was starting to come into the picture. Bridie was shading Pinnacle Ridge, Savage, Rover Imitation and Highlander as they started the last furlong. and she ran on stronglv to win by three-quarters of a length from Highlander. Two lengths back Pinnacle Ridge took third, and Rover finished on again along the rail for fourth.*half a neck back.
