TROTTING DON HALL WINS AT ADDINGTON

Tactician Outclasses Free-For-All Field

Don Hall, a rather unlucky third in the Rattray Handicap a week earlier, gained an impressive win in the Williams Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double on the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting at Addington on Saturday.

Don Hall was handily placed over the last mile and after shaking off East Dome at the furlong, he was untroubled to hold off other challengers over the last 100 yards. Glint made up ground for second, just ahead of Invicta and Auditor, with the rest beaten off.

Don Hall’s win. wag big third for the season and it took him back to a 4min 23aec mark for two miles. He is a fine stayer and will be a welcome addition to

New Zealand Cup class. ■ Owned and trained by R. D. Teahen, he is a gelding by Whipster from Roydon Hall. No excuses could be made for the others, all of which were well beaten.

The second leg, the Plains Handicap, was won most convincingly by Maharaja, which led over the last half-mile and won unextended by two lengths. The Don Hall-Maharaja doubles combination returned £36 17s fid for £l.

Tactician gained his fifth free-for-all success when he proved too good for his opponents in the Electric Stakes. He appeared to meet trouble when he tangled slightly racing to the half-mile. He took the lead from Lookaway with three furlongs left and from then he was not in danger of defeat Invicta and East Dome both made up a lot of ground to fill the other pladngs. Tactician’s win was the second gained during the day by his owner-trainer, M. C. McTigue. who prepared Maharaja to win the Plains Handicap. Tactician won the Electric Stakes for a second time. His other win in the race was in 1954. His win on Saturday was- the twentieth in his career. He hM also had 28 pladngs and his stake-earnings amount to £25,963. Lookaway, the hot favourite, had nothing in reserve when challenged by Tactician and he finished well back. The effort to get to the front at the end of three furlongs must have been too great for him: Other fine efforts were returned by Durban Chief and Au Fait The meeting was held in fine weather before a satisfactory attendance. . The track was in good order. Totalisator investments amounted to £94,855 15s, including £9812 ISs on the double, compared with £91,728 10s last year. Williams Handicap Light Nurse and Lady Shona broke badly at the start of the Wffliams Handicap. Auditor and East Dome shared the lead at the end of a for* long. East Dome was clear at the end of two furlongs and a half, Don Hall racing round the field in -the back straight to move up on the outside of Auditor in second place. Bedivus and Esteem were right up. ahead of Glint, La Mignon, Invicta and Dresden Lady. There was little change in the order over the next six furlongs and racing .to the straight East Dome was wading Don Hall, with Auditor badly placed on the inside. Canyon. Bedivus. Esteem. Glint, La Mignon and Invicta were also showing up. East Dome was soon in trouble inside the furlong and Don Hall took over. He was kept up to his work and won stylishly by a length and a half. Glint, after being forced wide to make her run, came home wen for second, a neck in front of the .fast* finishing Invicta, which was well back for most of the race. East Dome tired a little to be fourth, just ahead of Auditor, with five lengths to La Mignon. Derive, Bedivus, Lady Belmer, and Canyon. Tactician’s Free-for-all Prince Polka and'Lady Shona began best in the Electric Stakes. They were joined at the end of the first quarter by Lookaway. The lastnamed was dear with seven furlongs to run and he led through the straight from Prince PodST Lady Shona, Don Hall, Highland Air, Overdrive. Tactician, Sunsndy, Invicta, Showdown. Trueco and East Dome. Tactician raced three wide on the bend going out of the straight and he tangled slightly with four furlongs and a half left. He did not appear to lose more than a length or two and he was seventh at the halfmile. He continued his run and raced past Lookaway with ease near the three furlongs. He led by four lengths racing to the straight, with Lookaway, Don Hall. Prince Polk*. Lady Shona. Overdrive. Highland Air and Suzendy, with Invicta showing up further neck. , Tactician did not look like being caught and he won wen by two lergths Invicta finished with a great run wde out and got up tor second two lengths in front of the fastfinishing East Dome, which showed great speed after breaking early. Lady Shona was only half a neck back fourth, ahead of Overdrive, with Prince Polka. Highland Air, Showdown and Suzendy next. Bon Ton. Rola Veyor, Light Nurse. Showdown and East Dome lost ground at the start. Another Easy Win Durban Chief followed up his firstday win with another In the Beta Peter Handicap. He won by two lengths, but was coasting over the last 75 yards. Highland Glen. Serenelli and Hani Grattan were the pacemakers, setting a strong pace for the first six furlongs. Durban Chief improved his position over the last six furlongs and took the lead with two furlongs left. He turned for home three length* in front of Highland Glen, with Serene Di. Superfortress. Dan** Choice, Excellenza. Hazel Grattan and Recruit next. Durban Chief began to loaf inside the furlong and W. P. Walsh had to keep him going to hold a lead of two lengths Even so he did not look like being beaten. . Highland Glen, after being Close to the lead aD rae way. finished bn well for second, two length* tn front of Superfortress, which made up ground in the ttrsight Dsn’s Choice was three lengths fourth, ahead of the baekmarker.
