Field Reduced To Five

(New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, March 27.

The field of 18 entrants for the New Zealand women’s champion of champions singles title was reduced in Hastings today to five after four rounds of play. Only two competitors went through the day’s play unbeaten, and three others lost one game.

All but one of the nine South Island representatives x were eliminated.

The start of the tournament was delayed a day by rain flooding the greens, and play did not start until 10.30 a.m. today. The greens were in good order and dried out well as the day progressed.

The two-lifers are Mesdames B. Gabolinsky (Northland) and E. Tricker (Wellington), and the onelifers are Mesdames M. Larcomb (North Otago), N. Elliott (East Coast, North Island), and N. Dennison (Wanganui). Miss Tricker has a bye tomorrow morning in the fifth round. Miss Gabolinsky will play Mrs Elliott, and Mrs Larcomb will play Mrs Dennison.

Results today were:— First Round.—Mrs E. Fisher (Taranaki) beat Mrs L. W. Hughes (Otago), 16-8; Mrs N. Dennison (Wanganui) beat Mrs N. Pirrie (Christchurch), 27-11; Mrs B. Gabolinsky (Northland) beat Mrs R. Kirk (South Canterbury), 32-10; Mrs M. Larcomb (North Otago) beat Mrs I. Fenton (Auckland), 19-8; Mrs E. Tricker (Wellington) beat Mrs R. O’Brien (Southland), 20-15; Mrs V. Chapman (Marlborough) beat Mrs N. Elliott (East Coast), 23-15; Mrs P. Atkinson (Central Otago) beat Mrs M. Noble (Wairarapa), 22-13; Mrs E. McCormick (Nelson) beat Mrs A. Smith (Bay of Plenty), 20-18: Mrs E. Beaver (Waikato) beat Mrs H. Baird (Buller), 23-14.

Second Round. —Mrs Tricker beat Mrs Chapman, 20-13; Mrs- O’Brien beat Mrs Fenton, 19-18; Mrs Atkinson beat Mrs McCormick, 19-10; Mrs Elliott beat Mrs Noble, 17-13: Mrs Dennison beat Mrs Fisher, 19-12; Mrs Pirrie beat Mrs Kirk, 17-11; Mrs Gabolinsky beat Mrs Larcomb, 2315; Mrs Hughes beat Mrs Beaver, 18-14; Mrs Smith beat Mrs Baird, 24-8. Eliminated: Mesdames Kirk, Fenton, Noble, and Baird. Third Round.—Mrs Tricker beat Mrs Atkinson, 24-7; Mrs Elliott beat Mrs O’Brien, 17-16; Mrs Smith beat Mrs Fisher, 16-15; Mrs Larcomb beat Mrs Chapman, 21-12; Mrs Beaver beat Mrs McCormick, 26-15; Mrs Gabolinsky beat Mrs Dennison, 19-14; Mrs Pirrie beat Mrs Hughes, 24-14. Eliminated: Mesdames Hughes, O'Brien, Fisher. Chapman, and McCormick.

Fourth Round.—Mrs Larcomb beat Mrs Beaver, 18-16; Mrs Tricker beat Mrs Pirrie. 23-18; Mrs Dennison beat Mrs Atkinson, 23-9; Mrs Elliott beat Mrs Smith, 21-18. Eliminated: Mesdames Beaver, Pirrie, Atkinson, and Smith.
