TRAFFIC JAM IN SYDNEY
Demonstration By Truckdrivers
(N Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, Mar. 22. Thousands of lorries choked Sydney’s traffic yesterday when transport drivers staged a demonstration.
All the reserve police in the city were called out to control the worst traffic jam in memory when the placarded lorries began to converge on Parliament House. The drivers, members of the Transport Workers’ Union, were protesting against the New South Wales Government’s proposed Road Tax Bill which, they claim, would severely cut their earnings.
The bill proposes a tax on their loads.
