METHODIST CHURCH AT GREENDALE
Nearly 500 Attend Opening
The new Methodist church at Greendale was opened on Saturday by the president of the Methodist Church of New Zealand (the Rev. Dr. D. O. Williams). Nearly 500 persons attended the ceremony of dedication, thought to be the largest gathering ever held in the district.
The opening of the church was the establishment of an open fellowship—open to all kinds and conditions of men and ready to adapt itself to new circumstances and ideas, Dr Williams said. Greetings were conveyed to the congregation by the Rev. D. C. Moore, representing the Greendale Baptist church and the Malvern ministers’ fraternal. Visiting ministers and laity from Christchurch churches were represented by the Rev. V. R. Jamieson, chairman of the North Canterbury district of the Methodist Church.
The service of dedication was relayed from the crowded church to a nearby marquee, as the seating provided for an estimated crowd of 350 proved inadequate. An offertory taken up at the service amounted to £250 and this brought, the cost of the £5500 building within £3OO of being debt-free.
The service yesterday morning was conducted by Dr Williams, who preached the first sermon in the new church.
