NORTH CANTERBURY PLAYS MALVERN
Sub-Associations’ Shield The opening day’s play in the final sub-associations’ shield cricket match between Malvern and North Canterbury, provided some excellent batting by players on both sides. The feature of the day’s play was the batting of the Malvern tail-enders, who, for the last three wickets, added 168 runs. Malvem was dismissed 336, and North Canterbury, at stumps, had lost one wicket for 85 runs. _ _ For the eighth wicket, B. Charles and R. Stuart put on 66. When Stuart was dismissed, Charles and D. Gunn added a further 57 before the ninth wicket fell. Charles and J. Adams were then united in a partnership which yielded 45 runs. Charles, who was playing in his first representative game, batted patiently and well for his 67, the top score of the Malvern innings. He was at the crease for 180 minutes. Without him, Malvern might not have fared so well, for at the fall of the fifth wicket it had only 125 runs. North Canterbury began badly, losing its first wicket very quickly. At stumps, however, its position had improved considerably because of a fine and unbeaten second-wicket partnership of 76 between J. Blakeley and G. Gardiner. The match will be continued at Sheffield today. Scores MALVERN First Innings R. Gunn, c Robertshaw, b Sail .. 1 T. McGowan, b Sail .. .. 31 G. T. Wright, c Sail, b Robertshaw .. .. .. 39 N.
