CRICKET Boys’ High School Leads College In Annual Match
Two long and profitable partnerships gave Christchurch Boys’ High School a distinct advantage over Christ’s College on the first da yof the annual match yesterday of the annual match yesterday, but the innings of the. day was played by the College opening batsman, P. Andrews. In the early overs, College lost wickets rapidly, but Andrews attacked at every opportunity. A very strong front-foot player, he square cut, drove and pulled fiercely, and rarely allowed the loose ball to escape punishment. He batted only 68 minutes for 60 of the 89 runs made off the bat while he was in. It was an entertaining innings by any standards, and it says much for Andrews that he could make such progress while the innings was apparently being demolished around him. In the early stages the School bowlers, especially T. Ryder, were able to make the ball do a little off the pitch, and Ryder took wickets with two consecutive balls in his first over. After three overs, he had taken three for none, while Andrews was laying about him at the other end. Hostile Attack
Ryder, who takes a long run, bowled with considerable hostility for a time, but later it was the left-hander B. Hope who caused the batsmen most concern. Varying his flight and pace, and turning from leg quite frequently, he might have had better figures than three for 28, for he was hit several times barely out of a fieldsman’s reach. The captain, B Hopkins, began erratically, but in his second spell was much steadier and more successful.
It was not until J. H. L. Nevill joined Andrews that College recovered the early losses. Nevill, small but determined, helped Andrews to add 66 for the fifth wicket in 38 minutes, a counterattack of some brilliance and considerable violence. With the outfield very fast, Andrews hit 10 fours, but the tail-enders could not take the recovery any further. At lunch. School had scored 18 without loss.
As soon as play resumed,) the opening batsmen were out, and then Hopkins and B. G. Hadlee fought well to score 53 for the third wicket. For a time the College bowling was on top, but later Hadlee played some stylish strokes and Hopkins’s bat became more authoritative with the minutes.
Then there was another swing in the game; N. G. Clark, an offbreak bowler, broke through and School’s seventh wicket fell at 97. It was left to two of the youngest members of the team, A. Howard and M. Gregg, to give their side the first-innings lead, and they made it a substantial one with a fine partnership of 79. Gregg, who reached his 50 with a four off the last ball of the day, was helped by G. Brittenden in adding 36 for the ninth wicket.
Clark was the best of the College bowlers. He flighted the ball cleverly into the strong southerly wind, and although he split his spinning Anger, he continued to turn the ball quite sharply. He seemed mature in his methods and approach, and today the pitch may help him rather more than it did yesterday. J. Parson bowled very steadily at something above medium pace, and then bowled off-breaks, rather less accurately. The umpires are Messrs L. A. Butterfield and T. Burgess.
