RACING New Campaign Possible For Jimmy Flash
Earlier this season tendon trouble appeared to have put an end to Jimmy Flash’s career, but this good stayer may begin a preparation for another campaign before -long. The 1956 New Zealand Gup winner is being ridden regularly in the Cheviot district these days by Mr R. W. Burnett, who races him in partnership with Mrs Burnett and, all going well, he will rejoin J. L. Barr’s Riccarton team later.
Jimmy Flash had restricted racing as a four-year-old, but before he had to be put aside while being prepared for the 1957 Wellington Cup, he won the New Zealand Cup, the Watkins Handicap at Trentham and the Peninsula Handicap at Motukarara. He was also an unlucky second, to Cardigan in the Metropolitan at Riccarton.
Jimmy Flash started his five-year-old career with a run against the sprinters at Ashburton last August, but later he did not look as if he would stand up to a preparation for major races over more ground and was sent home. Fresh Start Josudi, due to make a fresh start at the Birchwood Hunt meeting, is now being trained at Riverton by W. Barr. Salt Water Treatment Martin’s Bay, which showed first-class form in hack class in Otago and Southland but went amiss at Washdyke last winter, was recently sent from Invercargill to Dunedin, where S. McKay will give him a course of salt water treatment Martin’s Bay has made a good recovery from the injury which put him out of action last year. The Haslett Team
Although there was a big clearance at the dispersal sale of Mr W. E. Hazlett’s stock last month, the Invercargill owner-trainer still has a sizeable team in work. There are seven horses from the Hazlett stable engaged at the Birchwood Hunt Club’s mseting at Invercargill on Saturday. Two of them, Tadpole, and Montrose, have been winners at Cromwell since the sale. Others include the jumpers Bonnie Strathyre, Brig O’Cally, and Tisred, which schooled brilliantly at Invercar-
gill last week. Another member of the team is Capet, which won the Riverton Great Western Steeplechase last year, but broke down later at the meeting. Capet will be making a fresh start at the Birchwood Hunt meeting. Oamaru Riders
