Rebels Withdraw From City

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 18. Indonesian Army claimed victory last night in a one-day struggle with the rebels *n r M< ~ an .’ bl fgest city in Sumatra, the New York Times reported today.

A dispatch to the newspaper from Jakarta said the Army s announcement reported that control of the Northern Sumatran city, its airport and its nearby harbour of Belawan on the Strait of Malacca had been regained yesterday morning.

The insurgents had “retreated” from the city, the announcement said. No mention was made of casualties.

A United Press dispatch from Singapore said rebel sources had confirmed the withdrawal, which they said was due to the failure of their reinforcements to arrive in time.
