CUBAN REBELS Oil Refinery Attacked

HAVANA, March 16. Rebels attacked the big Ameri-can-owned Texas Oil Company refinery at Santiago de Cuba in rebellious Orlente Province on Friday, but were driven off by refinery guards, delayed dispatches said yesterday. Reports from Santiago said that a determined band of over 30 rebels tried to scale 11-foot wire barricades around the area, but were driven off by heavy police fire. The 429-acre installation has been the scene of various incidents in the last forhight. Refinery officials only» recently strengthened the security guard. It was the second rebel attack on an American installation in Oriente in two days. The Montenegro Mine-, about 25 kilometres south of Baire, was attacked by 120 rebels on Thursday and destroyed by fire. The losses to the mine’s American operators, the Kingston Mine Corporation, were estimated at 200:000 dollars. Earlier this week in Santiago, rebels burned a Post Office truck bringing in air mail from- the airport. Losses included a 15,000 dollars transfer ’of funds from a Florida bank for the closing of local business of an American mining company.
