The Problem Of Peace
Sir,—Your correspondents reiterate that Britain and America will never attack Russia. Cannot they realise that Russia doesn’t know that? One nation (during World War II) was attacked in force while envoys of both nations were talking peace in her capital. Could it be that Russia builds submarines to discourage a feared attack, or to be able to punish any aggressor? With the 7th American fleet off Formosa and the China coast, won’t it cause China to buy submarines? If a Russian fleet had been cruising off Newfoundland for two or three years, whet would the Canadians think?—Yours, etc.. F.T.M. * March 13, 1958.
Representative Softball.—Wellington beat Auckland by 9-3 in a representative men’s softball match on Saturday. Auckland won the women’s match 10-3. In the [men’s game, Auckland led 3-2 till the last two innings, but a change of pitcher changed the picture.— (PJL)
