Athletics WILLIAMS WINS DECATHLON

National Contest At Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 16. The national decathlon competition in Auckland yesterday became a duel between R. A. Williams (Auckland), seeking his third consecutive championship and A. G. Lawless (Waikato), who had won the event on four successive occasions. After the first five events Williams held a lead of 168 points, which he increased to 453 at the conclusion of the competition. The final result was: R. A. Williams (Auckland), 6053 points; A. G. Lawless (Waikato), 5600; A. Divich (Auckland), 4049. Results were:— Pole Vault: Williams, 9ft 9m (316); Lawless, 9ft 3in (266). Javelin: Lawless, 160 ft 4in (508), Williams, 154 ft (474); Divich, 93ft sin (236). 110 metres hurdles: Williams, 15.9 sec (612); Lawless, 16.2 sec (557); Divich, 16.9 sec (443). Discus: Williams, 138 ft sin (689), Lawless, 124 ft 4in (529); Divich, 70ft 6in (298). 1500 metres: Divich, 4min 4.6 sec (400); Williams, 4min 56sec (290); Lawless, smin 4sec (236).
