RACING £1660 DOUBLE AT TRENTHAM

Favourite Rover, Wins St. Leger

Stylish Milling caused a major upset of form in the President’s Handicap on the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday.

The form horses were tangled by the going after heavy rain earlier in the day, and Stylish Milling and Clinker, two of the elders in the field of 17, had the finish to themselves. Stylish Milling won by threequarters of a length.

This seven-year-old Milling mare from Otaki had not won in open company before. This was her first win since* a victory against the hack stayers at Wangatii in February, 1956. She was the seventeenth favourite, paid £5B 18s 6d for a win, and paved the way for an outsize double dividend. In a double pool of £128,101. Stylish Milling carried only 1929| 10s tickets. The favourite, Highlander, carried 63,307 tickets: he finished eleventh. The second favourite, Teaka, was a distant sixth and Resemblance, the third favourite, was one of the tailenders. Both were unable to run up to their best form in the going. The Suburban Handicap, the second leg of the double, was won narrowly by Royal Crescent, the eighth favourite of 14. This six-year-old -Brer Fox mare from Te Rapa was beaten off fifth in the North Island Challenge Stakes a week earlier. She started 12 wide in the Suburban Handicap and was a good way from the lead for the first half mile. She made ground quickly to reach a challenging position going to the furlong and she worried the light-weight Esparto away from victory.

Holders of 255 5s tickets (104 oncourse) on the Stylish Milling— Royal Crescent combination received £1660 15s 6d for £l. The favourite Salaam, carrying 817 double tickets and £7469 10s in win-and-place betting, shewed nothing like one of his best gallops in the conditions and beat only two home. Half Head New Zealand St. Leger honours were narrowly and gamely won by Rover, Mr T. C. Lowry’s black gelding by Faux Tirage from Super Snipe. Rover was the favourite and he lasted to win by half a head from Daysun, his conqueror in the Gloaming Stakes at Trentham in January. None of the others was concerned in the finish. The New Zealand Oaks winner Froth was a distant third. . 5 There was heavjr rain, before the St Leger and Rover’s time of 3min 9jsec was the slowest since 1946, when Western Front won. Rover was the only successful favourite. He gave the*Awapuni jockey, J. W. Harris, his first success in the classic. The attendance was 12,000 compared with 13,800 on the corresponding day last year. The oncourse totalisator turnover was £183,860, including £20.273 on the double, compared with £187.163 10s on the second day of last year’s meeting. The total for the meeting was £358,672, a decrease of £8728. President’s Handicap Stylish Milling, which tailed off early in the race, outstayed Clinker to win the. President’s Handicap at long odds. Stylish Milling joined the tail of the bunch in the back straight and passed three horses going to the half mile, where Honest John was out by two lengths from Royal Zorra and the light-weight Whiohau. Clinker was then behind Stylish Milling, and so was Money-Go-Round. Stylish Milling made a big run to be close to the lead coming to the straight and she quickly mastered Honest John. Clinker came strongly into the picture going to the furlong, where Summersette was not far behind him and well diear of the others. Stylish Milling shaded Clinker at the weights beating him by three-quarters of a length. Summersette, which had been two places ahead of Stylish Milling at the half-mile, was all. out to last for third, three lengths and a half back. She had only a head to spare from Money-Go-Round, which passed several horsey on the inner from the home turn. Ho Choy was fifth four lengths back and Teaka was sixth. Teaka did not show to advantage in the conditions, though he passed a few weary horses in the last half mile. Whiohau was a weakening seventh, and Pinnacle Ridge, last year’s winner, was eighth after being third on the home turn. Royal Zorra, which led early and then trailed, was next ahead of Honest John, Highlander. Maquana. Gay Jinx, Regal Stuart. Resemblance, Cornflake, and Finito. Little to Spare Rover’s gameness was tested to the utmost inside the last furlong of the New Zealand St. Leger in coping with a stout challenge from Daysun. The end came just in time for Rover, which lasted to beat the Takanini colt by half a head. Daysun. which had been trailing, came to the front nearing the home turn, but Rover dashed past him and went clear. Rover led into the last furlong by a length and a half. Daysun made a great bid to regain his lead, but failed by inches. Diadochi set a slow pace through the straight for the first time and round to the half-mile. There Daysun was only a neck behind him. Bagman, Rover, and Imitation were then running in line a length behind and a length clear of Red Robe, Gibraltar, and Froth. Diadochi and Bagman were done before the straight was reached, and it was a two-horse race from the furlong. Froth passed Imitation in the last furlong for third, eight lengths behind. Daysun. There was a gap of four lengths to Imitation, and next were Gibraltar, Red Robe, and the stragglers. Diadochi and Bagman. The Second Leg Royal Crescent recorded her fifth win for the season tor Mr G. Courtshe got up to beat the I S i r* weigh t, Esparto, in the last few st " de ® 111 the Suburban Handicap. T 3 * 8 Performance of merit by Royal Crescent; she was the tailfur,®n «* and had to sustain a big run from the three

furlongs. That run carried her into a challenging position inside the furlong, and was sustained to the end to master Esparto, which did not go under easily. Esparto started from the outside of the field and was not able to work over very close to the rails. She ran past Melanion into a short lead at the furlong and was headed only in the last few strides. ' Monogram again showed his prowess as a strong finisher in getting up for third, a length and a quarter back. He did not get a very good run from the turn, otherwise he might have put the winner to the test. Privy Council, third into the last furlong, finished fourth half a length behind Monogram. Baraden was fifth in a gap of two lengths. He shaded Happy Warrior, which had to change ground to get a run in the straight. Vita Glow was a weakening seventh after following Sonella into the straight. Results:— RIMU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of £BOO. One mile and three furlongs. 7. 7—B. V.
