RENEWAL OF BRIDGES
Major Problem In Roading
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, March 12. One of the biggest reading problems the Ministry of Works faces throughout the country is bringing bridges up to the required standard, according to the Minister of works, (Mr Watt). He was commenting on the progress of the North-western Motorway which he inspected during a brief visit to Auckland. “I was very pleased with the way things are moving there,” said Mr Watt. “However, it will not really be a four-lane motorway until the bridges are widened. This problem of bridging is one of the main thihgs which we have to face throughout the country.” Announcing that he would leave by air for Dunedin this morning and travel by car to Glenorchy, near Queenstown, to open a new bridge, he said: “The more bridges I can open, the happier I will be.”
He explained that the Ministry was looking for ways of placing greater emphasis on bridge construction. Mr W. F. Young, who was recently appointed director of reading, had been asked to place before the National Roads Board a plan of bridging requirements.
Mr Watt said an outlay of about £350,000 was involved in widening the three bridges on the North-western Motorway. However, he was certain motorists would appreciate the extra passing room which would be available even before the bridges were improved. If the work proceeded at the present rate the new lanes would, he hoped, be ready next summer.
