Boxing SCANLAN BEATS BEATON
Points Decision In Fine Bout
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 10.
v—xxie Beaton (list 111 b) was defeated on points by the Samoan, Tuna Scanlan, in a thrilling 12 rounds at the Town Hall, Wellington, tonight. Beaton fought gamely, and though Scanlan’s points lead was clear, a fair number in the large crowd expressed disapproval. Scanlan, his right held firmly under Beaton’s elbow, often had to fight a one-fisted bout. Beaton, fighting at his heaviest, gave an impressive display. He countered cleverly with his right hand and drew blood from Scanlan's nose and above his right eye. Scanlan hammered away at Beaton’s body, and his two-fisted attack had Beaton in trouble more than once.
In the seventh the crowd was expecting a knock-out after a specially vigorous attack by Scanlan. Towards the end Beaton showed great fighting spirit. He was twice down for eight in the eleventh round, and wobbled to; his corner at the close of this rc md. Then .e fight was almost cut short as a bottle of smelling salts spilled in one of Beaton’s eyes. He was partly blind till his eye was cleared. Instead of fading, Beaton started the final round by forcing the pace, but as it progressed was content to box out time. Creoff Campbell (list 91b) beat Ronnie William (list 6%1b) in the round of a professional preliminary bout.
