HEALTH STAMP SUBSIDY
Board Expresses ! Gratitude J Tne King George V Memorial Chldren’s Health Camps Federation expects to benefit by about £s.ooo a year from the £ for £ | subsidy on the net proceeds received from the sale of health stamps as from 1958. This scheme had been approved by the Cabins recently, the chairman (Dr. HJB. Turbott) told a recent meeting of the board of the federation.
The board expressed its gratitude to the Government for this assistance. Dr. Turbott said the subsidy would enable the federation to carry on its work, and he explained that during the war yeafs considerable financial reserves had been built up when the health camps were operating on a very restricted basis. Since the war, however, the need for rebuilding, renovations and new equipment for the camps had exhausted these reserves and it was expected at one time that some camps would have to be closed through lack of finance, he said. Because of the generosity of the Government this would not now be necessary and the health camps would be able to continue to assist the 2500 children who attend camp each year. Dr. Turbott also tabled a report drawn up by a committee of the Board of the Health Camps Federation which sets out the recommendations for the future development of health camps.
He said that if the federation was to continue to enjoy the support of the public during the Annual Health Stamp Campaign, the federation must ensure that health camps serve the community in the light of the changing social needs. He thought that if the report was adopted, health camps would be able to play an even more important part in the social work of New Zealand.
