QUOTATIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH

BANK OF N.S.W. Travel Department’s Expansion

On March 7, the Bank of New South Wales celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of its entry into the travel business. Mr H. R. Brown, manager of the travel department at the bank’s head office in Sydney, who returned recently from his visit as a delegate to the Pacific Area Travel Association in Santa Barbara. California, said that in recent years banks had been playing an important role in travel promotion in the Pacific area. Established in Sydney in 1933 and in New Zealand in 1935, the travel department operates on an international basis, embracing a world-wide network of travel agents which makes it possible to introduce customers to agents at the major entry points for land, sea and air transport in most countries. The Bank had entered the travel business because it had wide ramifications and international financial experience, as well as realising the fact that banking and travel requirements were so closely related, said Mr Brown. He said some idea of the extent of the bank’s travel services could be gained from the following figures recently released. Almost 10,000 booking had been made for sea travel. 16,000 for air travel. 10 000 by rail, and more than 40.000 individual hotel bookings had been made during the past 12 months. The bank’s Berkeley Square branch in London alone had conducted personal interviews with more than 38500 peoole in this period to complete their travel arrangements. Altered Exchange Rates The £ lost 4 cent on the Canadian dollar last week, but gained fractionally on the United States dollar.
