Soya Maru At Cape Town
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, March 7.
The Japanese Antarctic vessel Soya Maru arrived at Cape Town today from the south after her unsuccessful attempt to land a second wintering party at the Japanese base at Ongul Island. The expedition leader, Dr. Takeshi Nagata said that before a second team could be established, it would have been necessary to fly in adequate supplies for a year. With deterioration of the weather and an unseasonable extension of the icepack, he had decided to abandon the attempt. The Soya Maru lost a propeller blade and suffered damage to the other propeller shaft and the rudder in the ice.
