Sir, —I think “M.T.” rather misses the point in the appreciation of F. L. Roberts’s letter. My impression was not that the writer was just joking, for fun, as it were. While claiming our attention with his shocking exaggerations he has neatly debunked a selection of popular illusions about Americans. If this had been attempted by some more earnest individual, as many paragraphs would have been required as Mr Roberts has used sentences. In my view this is a delightful example of the literary virtue of succintness.—Yours, etc., R.S. March 7, 1958.
