Exchange On Cheques
Sir, —I read with interest “Depositor’s” letter on exchange on cheques. Working in a bank, I am allowed to negotiate cheques in any town in New Zealand free of exchange. Could the postmaster tell me why I am charged exchange when I transfer money from trading bank account to my National Savings account? I have discussed this matter with the officer in the post office concerned, and yet they regularly refuse to take my cheques without my paying exchange on them. I have also noticed that these cheques go through my account with no exchange marked on them. The most interesting point about these transactions is that no exchange is marked on the cheques when they are presented for payment.— Yours, etc.,
BANK OFFICER. January 20, 1958. [A spokesman at the Chief Post Office said it was not desired to comment on this letter.]
