Good Prices Realised At Culverden Ewe Fair

As was the case last season, yesterday’s Culverden ewe fair lost nothing by comparison with any of its predecessors.

By all standards it was a very solid sale. If there had been any anticipation of lower values on the score of lower wool prices they were not justified. A smaller but more select gallery of buyers was in attendance and they were obviously out to buy. Bearing in mind that this was a sale of finewoolled breeds, particularly halfbreds, values might be quoted as well up on Addington and an improvement on Amberley at the beginning of the week. Twotooths sold to £5 4s and there were a number of other pens which were close to this price, many Corriedales being included.

It was, too, an excellent sale for four-year-olds which sold freely throughout the day at right up to best late rates. Top price in this section was 73s and, although it was 18s under last year’s top price, a feature of the market was the good average level of values.

It was a bigger entry than last year. In all 15,583 sheep were yarded, comprising 4360 twotooths, 10,317 older ewes and 906 ewe lambs. Last year the entry totalled 12,236 head. Many buyers of fine-wooled sheep hold off for Culverden m the expectation—and they are seldom disappointed—of acquiring well-bred, hard-conditioned ewes off hill and tussock which are so obviously good shifters. Thus yesterday they bought freely and with confidence.

The auction commenced with the sale of two-tooths. Here the auctioneers’ old adage that the “first are the cheapest” obtained. From a modest beginning the sale quickly improved and before many pens were reached values had improved by 5s to 6s a head.

A feature of the sale was the impression that buyers obviously had self-imposed limits beyond which they were not prepared to venture. The natural outcome in many cases was that they paid too dearly for sheep of only mediocre quality and not enough for the top pens. This too, was reflected in a comparison between the lines of comparable two-tooths sold yesterday and at the same sale last year. Thus, while some of the top sheep were cheaper by up to 10s to 15s the average decline in values over 15 pens was only ss. Top price for the sale anti for two-tooths went to C. Burrows (Beachwood) for 70 halfbreds at £5 4s. Next on the list Was estate D. W. Davison (Kyenton) with 76 Corriedales at £5 2s. R. Bethell (Terrace Paddocks) sold 280 at 97s and C. G. Gardner (Emu Plains) realised 95s for 263 and 92s for 70. Among the array of very serviceable four-year-olds the top-

t priced pen was produced by R. H. • Roxburgh (Barcaldine) who sold • 211 at 72s to 735. A sale at 70s > was made by the Mt. Benger r Estate (Hurunui) for 138; D. McLean (Glenshee) sold 150 at 695; and for 159 G. J. H. Reid i (Grassington) received 675. Over 11 pens of four-year-olds prices showed an average decline of 6s > on last year’s market. » Top price for five-year-olds *was » 60s and this went to Mt Benger I Estate with the sale of 318. V. and G. R. Gould (The Hermitage) ! realised 57s for 57. The next best - price went to the Mt. Palm Estate J (Rotherham) with 70 at 565. Just short of 1000 ewe lambs ) were yarded and the pick of the - offering sold readily at 54s to 625, s with the balance making down to • 41s. The top-priced pen was sold s on account of W. F. Grueber (Bex- ’ hill).
