Clear Finish On Exteriors

One of the most attractive materials for the exterior of a house is varnished or oiled weatherboards. It is common to see the appearance of these weatherboards marred by black stains around the nail holes.

These stains are caused by chemical action between the iron of the nails and tannin in the wood when moisture is present. They can be prevented by the use of galvanised nails. If it is not possible to use galvanised nails, the steel nails should be punched well below the surface and the holes puttied as soon as possible. If exterior woodwork is to be clear finished it should not be rubbed down with steel wool because tiny particles of steel adhere to the wood and stains form when it becomes damp.
