America
Sir,—Being a Yank I have listened for praise of our “Heaven on Earth.” Alas, the American is described as wealthy, arrogant, well-to-do, vainglorious, rich, un-' cultured, and opulent. This is untrue. We don’t have money to burn and even if we did oil is more efficient. (Dollar bills suffice for lighting cigarettes, but are poor for cigars.) We have our hardships. My last Cadillac had faulty air-conditioning and its colour T.V. was terrible. 1 learn my secretary eloped with my stockbroker, converting my yacht for a honeymoon. There is noone to handle my money. Stocks have dropped and my arms factory closed for lack of contracts. Upon returning, I’ll have to negotiate with my crooked Congressman about getting another war started to pay for my new summer place in Monaco. And you think you have troubles!
—By the way, can anyone lend me a fiver until payday?—Yours,
F. L. ROBERTS, Fulbright Scholar. University of Canterbury, March 5, 1958.
